The team of Baku Marionette Theatre is deeply agitated and saddened by the situation in Ukraine. Being the men of culture, the men of art, we believe that the war in any of its manifestations is something terrible. It should not happen in the today’s world. We join the voices of all those who are against any war. Any war is a huge loss not only in business and economy, but also in culture and souls. War destroys cultural ties, which then cannot be easily restored – after all, war throws the Nations many, many decades back...

The launch of the Baku Marionette Theatre’s new building took place on December 24, 2016 – exactly five years ago. Prominent figures of Azerbaijan culture and art gathered together in the theatre to celebrate this jubiley anniversary. Head officers of the State Historical-Architectural Reserve “Icherisheher” took part in the event, too. Participants enthusiastically spoke about unical contribution of the Baku Puppet Theatre to the cultural palette of our country as well as to the theatrical art globally. Invaluable role of the First Vice-President of Azerbaijan, Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva, in bringing the project of the new theatre building to life was especially noted. It is symbolic that the jubiley date of the new building's launch coincided with the date of the 60th anniversary of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev. Participants of the theatre's jubiley party sent their sincere congratulations and warmest wishes to Mr. President on the occasion of his jubiley birthday.

A few days prior the Victory Day, Heyran Gorchu, assistant artistic director, addressed the audience of our “Leyli and Majnun” show with a special opening speech. Noting heroic dedication of the martyrs, who paid their lives for this day, Heyran-khanum also expressed the deep gratitude to all veterans, because they bravely fought against the invaders and won, whilst many of them were injured. After congratulations on the first anniversary of the glorious victory won under the leadership of Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan, President Ilham Aliyev, she stressed that this long-awaited event is especially close to our theatre, because Baku Marionette Theatre had emerged due to creative heritage of the great Uzeyir Hajibeyli. Uzeyir-bey grew up and obtained his initial impuls as a great composer and playwright in Karabakh, Shusha, and if that didn't happen then our theatre would not appear at all. Heyran-khanum expressed the theatre team's hope for an honour to perform soon in Shusha – Uzeyir-bey’s homeland. The show of that evening was notable for special inspiration and excitement of the performers.

The world culture has faced an irrecoverable loss – great son of the Georgian Nation, a famous director, dramatist, artist, sculptor ... a great performer in the broadest sense of the word Rezo Gabriadze has died.

In 1981, Gabriadze founded the famous Tbilisi Marionette Theatre and rest of his further on life went joined to this theatre. It was due to professional cooperation, personal creative and energetic interaction with this great Master, that young Azerbaijani director and artist Tarlan Gorchu in the mid-1980s got an idea of creating a Marionette theatre in Baku. So, indirectly, Rezo Gabriadze stood at the origins of our theatre as well.

Rezo Gabriadze is also known as a scriptwriter of more than 35 movies, including such masterpieces of the world cinema as Don't Grieve (1969) and Mimino (1977).

Gabriadze has died at the age of 84 in Tbilisi.

Rest in peace, dear Master!
